Have you ever got freaked out hearing the howling sound of your beloved pet at night? It is the normal tenor of human beings to link that howling with supernatural and paranormal stuff. In my case, I would grab a blanket, cover my head and sit inside shivering. But have you ever wondered why your dog just starts howling all of a sudden? There are many explanations for that; and here are few things that could be the reason why dogs howl at night
Howling as a defense mechanism
Dogs howl to signal others that the area they are entering is already claimed and occupied. It is actually a warning that intruders of their territory will have severe consequences. So next time, when a dog howls, beware!!!
To express anxiety
Dogs sometimes howl to express anxiety. Dogs are a social animal who would love to spend their time with caretakers. However, if they are left alone for a while, and they are not used to it, they might develop anxiety which they express in the form of howling.
To communicate illness
Thankfully human have a language to express the sickness, but the dogs don’t have. They howl as a sign of discomfort or pain. Pay attention to the duration of the howling. If they are howling for long, then you should make a trip to the vet.
To demand attention
Some times it is the dog’s way of grabbing attention from caretakers. If they suddenly felt a lack of care, love, and affection, then they howl to get this message across.
Ancestral traits
The wolves are their ancestors and howling is their way of wolves finding each other, marking their territory or informing other pack members of their location. The dogs have this trait on their DNA, and hence they howl to let others know that it is their territory.
External sounds
At times, the external noises such as ambulance or police sirens can quickly make any dog howl. It is because they resemble this high pitched sound to howling.
Well… That is it!! No ghosts no supernatural!! Just pay attention to the fur balls you will know why they are howling.
